Novayagazeta.ru, in an article by Vyacheslav Polovinko entitled “Казахстан не хочет на войну: Несмотря на опровержения властей, казахстанское общество встревожено слухами об отправке солдат в Сирию – “Kazakhstan does not want to go to war: Despite rebuttals from the authorities, the Kazakh society is alarmed by rumors about the soldiers being sent to Syria”, said: “On June 22, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan learned that they were being prepared for the ride to Damascus.
Vladimir Shamanov, head of the defense committee of Russia’s State Duma, told media that Russia asked these two countries to show brotherly kindness and send theirs soldiers to Syria to monitor the so-called “de-escalation agreement”. This information was confirmed by Ibrahim Kalyn, a representative of the President of Turkey. The Kazakh side made an official statement on Friday morning, June 23. Kazakh Foreign Minister Kairat Abdrakhmanov told that “Kazakhstan is not negotiating with anyone on sending its soldiers to Syria”. The media quoted him as saying: “The existence of a resolution by the UN Security Council, where, let me remind you, Kazakhstan is a non-permanent member for 2017-2018, and a relevant mandate of this international organization are a vitally important precondition for our country for considering the deployment of peacekeepers at any hot spot worldwide”.
The problem is that no one will just let Kazakhstan stay aside. That, indeed, is the view of Arkady Dubnov, a political analyst and expert on Central Asia, who, in an interview with Novaya Gazeta, suggests that the idea to send Kazakhstan as an observer “had been growing for quite some time”.
