Kazakhstan seems to have done the right thing, turning its back on Lithuania following a case in which its citizens were subjected to vile ill-treatment by the Lithuanian authorities

Baltnews.lv, in an article by Viktor PETROV entitled “Казахстан выбрал Латвию. Хотя еще недавно ставил на Литву” – “Kazakhstan has chosen Latvia. Although recently it had been betting on Lithuania”, said:  “Deputy Prime-minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Askar MAMIN, said that his country had chosen Latvia as the main logistics and distribution center in the Baltic States. He made that public during his meeting with the President of SJSC “Latvijas dzelzceļš”, Edvīns BĒRZIŅŠ, which took place recently in Riga.
Yet Kazakhs had said the same thing about Lithuania last year, signing a memorandum on cooperation to substantiate such intention.
Kazakhstan’s option for Latvia is to a certain extent surprising, because KTZ Express, Kazakhstan Railways (KTZ) logistics subsidiary, was negotiating with Lithuania on this matter as of 2015. And those negotiations were successful for our southern neighbor.
At that time KTZ Express and V.Paulis & Associates Real Estate, a Lithuanian company, created a joint venture. It was supposed to be used for the transportation of containerized goods, which, as it now turns out, would be shipped through Latvian territory.
There are a lot of questions concerning Kazakhstan’s option, including whether our new strategic partner will once more reconsider his decision, if Lithuania would offer more favorable tariffs?”.
We don’t know what has prompted Astana to reconsider its choice in a matter pertaining to the Baltic region. But, whatever the underlying reasons, Kazakhstan seems to have done the right thing, turning its back on Lithuania following a case in which its citizens were subjected to vile ill-treatment by the Lithuanian authorities.
That story was reported by Sputniknews.kz, in a report entitled “Отзыв генконсула Литвы не связан с выдворением казахстанской семьи” – “The withdrawal of the Lithuanian Consul General is not connected with the expulsion of the Kazakh family” and published on 5 June. In it, they said this: “It has been reported earlier that Lithuanian Consul General in Almaty Ryagimantas Yablonskas was recalled in connection with information on non-transparent visa-related work.
“I can say with certainty that this (the recall of the Consul General) is not related to a completely different story of the citizen of Kazakhstan. Remember, she got a visa: the documents, that had been provided, proved to be enough for obtaining a visa. In Lithuania, the border guards did not allow entry, they had their own arguments” Valdas Burneika said.
In March, Sputnik Kazakhstan wrote about the Kazakh family, which, upon arrival in Lithuania, was detained by the border guards. The family members spent 16 hours in the cell of the Vilnius airport, and then they were expelled. They say they lost hundreds of thousands of tenge (i.e. several thousand dollars) because of the trip interruption. An employee at the office of Lithuania’s Consulate General in Almaty explained that documents of the Kazakh tourists were all in order, and they can appeal the decision by the Lithuanian border service to the Vilnius court, hiring a Lithuanian lawyer for this purpose.
One of the affected family members, Adilya Yusupova, wrote a complaint and sent it to the Kazakh Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Later, Kazakhstan’s MFA stated that the reason for the expulsion of Kazakhstanis was an “illegal migration threat”.

There is no need for Kazakhstan to use the ports of the post Soviet Baltic countries — Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. Delivering freight by rail directly to Rotterdam is much easier and cheaper, than doing the same via Riga, Klaipeda and/or Tallinn.
